Eucalyptus oil in Aromatherapy

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus ) family Myrtaceae, is a long evergreen plant with a height upto 250 ft. It is native to Australia and cultivated worldwide. Australian Aboriginals used eucalyptus leaf infusions as a traditional medicine for body aches, sinus congestion, fever and cold. Chinese , Indian Ayurveda, Greece, Brazil, and other forms of medicines have been using Eucalyptus Oil for ages.

The essential oil is prepared from dried leaves of Eucalyptus trees which are crushed and distilled. Of the 700 species of Eucalyptus throughout the world, approx. 500 of them produce an essential oil, and global Eucalyptus Oil production is mainly done from E. globulus species, more commonly known as “Blue Gum”.

Eucalyptus oil has proved its efficacy beyond doubt as a therapeutic agent because of its decongestant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, antibacterial, and antidepressant activities. It is known for its constituents like Eucalyptol (60-80%), limonene, aromadendrene, cymene, Terpinene, Phellandrene, Camphor, and Pinene. This oil has been used in the treatment of various metabolic and infectious diseases such as:

  • To treat common cold, coughs, sinusitis and bronchitis
  • To treat skin problems like wounds,, burns, herpes, insect bites
  • Respiratory conditions such as Asthma may be helped by inhaling steam with added Eucalyptus oil.
  • It has potential as a treatment for diabetes. Although we don’t know much at this time, experts believe that it may play role in lowering blood sugar in people with diabetes.
  • Eases the joint pain, back pain. It is found helpful to the people with muscle or joint injury.
  • Stimulates hair follicles and promote hair growth
  • Regulates and activates nervous system for neuralgia, headaches and debility.

How to Use Eucalyptus Oil:

  • Add a few drops of Eucalyptus Oil to a diffuser or steam bowl for aromatherapy
  • For topical use, add a few drops of Eucalyptus Oil into a carrier oil such as Coconut oil or Almond oil and apply it to the affected area, such as to your chest to ease congestion or on your joints to overcome joint pain.
  • Just be sure to not to consume the essential oil as it can lead to toxicity.
